SEAI Solar Panel Grant Ireland 2027: Rates, Rules and Eligibility
The solar panel grant in Ireland for 2027 pays up to €1,800 for solar PV and a further €600 for a home battery, giving a standard household €2,400 in total. Homeowners receiving certain social welfare payments can claim up to €9,000 instead.
The headline rates themselves did not move. What changed, from 6 October 2026, is who can claim and what else is now covered.
- Age cutoff moved. Homes built and occupied before 2025 qualify, up from before 2021.
- New battery grant. A flat €600 for any home battery of 5 kWh or larger.
- Enhanced routes widened. Up to €9,000 for qualifying welfare recipients and for Dublin RAS pilot landlords, plus fully funded packages under two further schemes.
Those three changes pull thousands of newer Irish homes into a scheme that had excluded them for years. Below is what each route pays, who it covers, and the application rules that decide whether the money actually lands.
How Much Is the Solar Panel Grant in Ireland for 2027?
5 separate domestic routes now sit under the SEAI solar grant, and each pays a different amount. A standard household claims up to €2,400. A household on a qualifying social welfare payment claims up to €9,000. Two routes cover the installation in full.
| Scheme | Solar PV support | Battery support | Who qualifies |
| Standard homeowner grant | Up to €1,800 | €600 | Homeowners and private landlords, homes built and occupied before 2025 |
| Enhanced grant for welfare recipients | Up to €8,400 | €600 | Homeowners who own and live in the home and receive a named DSP payment |
| Warmer Homes Scheme | Fully funded, up to 4 kWp | Fully funded, 5 kWh | Eligible lower-income households, built and occupied before 2006, BER C to G |
| Medically Vulnerable Scheme | Fully funded, up to 4 kWp | 5 kWh included | Eligible medically vulnerable households |
| Dublin RAS pilot | Up to €8,400 | €600 | Landlords with a long-term tenant on RASP support in Dublin |
Only one route applies to any single property. SEAI pays on the route you qualify for rather than the sum of several.
Standard SEAI Solar PV Grant Rates for Homeowners and Landlords
Standard rates did not change in Budget 2027. SEAI still pays €700 for each kWp up to 2 kWp, then €200 for each additional kWp up to 4 kWp, capped at €1,800. The €600 battery grant sits on top.
| System size | Solar PV grant | With a 5 kWh battery |
| 2 kWp | €1,400 | €2,000 |
| 2.5 kWp | €1,500 | €2,100 |
| 3 kWp | €1,600 | €2,200 |
| 4 kWp or above | €1,800 | €2,400 |
Payment is pro rata, so part-kilowatt systems are paid proportionally. A 2.5 kWp array draws €1,500 under SEAI’s published scheme rules, not the 3 kWp figure.
If you want to see how a given array size maps onto your own electricity use before you commit, the solar savings calculator is the quicker way to sketch it out.
Which Homes Qualify Now That the Age Cutoff Moved to 2025
Any home built and occupied before 2025 now qualifies, up from the old before-2021 rule. That brings four extra years of Irish housing stock into the scheme. Estate homes finished in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 were locked out until October 2026.
Newer builds were originally excluded on the logic that they already met modern BER standards. Rising electricity bills and a national push on rooftop generation changed that position.
So a 2023 semi-detached house with a B2 rating is as eligible for a residential solar installation as a 1970s bungalow, provided no SEAI solar funding has already been paid at that meter point.
Claiming the €600 Battery Grant With or Without Solar Panels
The battery grant is a flat €600 for any home battery of 5 kWh or larger. Anything under 5 kWh does not qualify. It can be claimed three ways.
- As part of a new solar PV installation.
- Added to a solar PV system already installed at the property.
- On its own, with no solar PV at all.
Those are the SEAI rules. What an installer will take on is a separate question. Going Solar fits batteries as part of a new solar PV installation. A battery added to a system already on the roof is possible where Going Solar installed that system, the existing battery is a Solis, Dyness or Weco unit under 18 months old, and there is space for the additional unit. Standalone battery installations are not offered.
One detail is worth knowing before you plan the work. A battery installed alongside panels under a single contract carries 0% VAT, while a standalone battery retrofit attracts the standard 23% rate.
Who Qualifies for the €9,000 Enhanced Solar Grant
Homeowners who own and live in their home and receive one of seven named Department of Social Protection payments can claim up to €9,000.
That breaks down as up to €8,400 towards solar PV of up to 4 kWp, plus €600 for a qualifying battery. The enhanced rates run at €3,350 for each kWp up to 2 kWp, then €850 for each additional kWp up to 4 kWp.
| System size | Enhanced solar PV grant | With a 5 kWh battery |
| 2 kWp | €6,700 | €7,300 |
| 3 kWp | €7,550 | €8,150 |
| 4 kWp or above | €8,400 | €9,000 |
Which Social Welfare Payments Qualify for the Enhanced Grant
7 payments open the enhanced route, and some carry extra conditions attached to the payment itself.
- Fuel Allowance as part of the National Fuel Scheme
- Jobseeker’s Allowance for over six months, with a child under seven
- Working Family Payment
- One-Parent Family Payment
- Domiciliary Care Allowance
- Carer’s Allowance, where you live with the person you care for
- Disability Allowance for over six months, with a child under seven
Why the Enhanced Grant Is Not Means Tested
Eligibility rests on receiving a named payment rather than on an income threshold. A household well above any notional income line still qualifies if one of the seven payments is in place, and a low-income household receiving none of them does not.
One condition catches landlords out. The enhanced route requires you to own and live in the property, so a rented house is confined to the standard €2,400 route unless it falls under the Dublin pilot below. Citizens Information’s guidance on solar panel grants sets out how the payment conditions interact with the other home energy schemes.
Fully Funded Solar Under Warmer Homes and the Medically Vulnerable Scheme
Two routes cover the work in full rather than paying a grant against an invoice. Both have been expanded to include solar PV of up to 4 kWp and a 5 kWh battery.
Warmer Homes applies to households that own and live in a home built and occupied before 2006, hold a published BER in band C, D, E, F or G, and receive a qualifying Department of Social Protection payment. An SEAI surveyor visits, assesses the property and decides which measures are appropriate, so the package is not something the householder selects.
The Solar PV for Medically Vulnerable Scheme has been expanded along the same lines, with up to 4 kWp of solar PV and 5 kWh of battery storage fully funded for eligible households.
How Dublin RAS Pilot Landlords Can Claim Up to €9,000
Landlords renting to a long-term tenant on Rental Accommodation Scheme Pilot support through one of 4 Dublin local authorities can claim the enhanced rates, up to €9,000 combined. The four are Dublin City Council, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal and South Dublin.
These 4 conditions apply to the property and the application:
- The tenancy is supported under the Dublin RASP, confirmed in writing by the local authority
- The property was built and occupied before 2025
- The property has a valid MPRN
- No SEAI grant has previously been paid for the same measure at that MPRN
Properties on standard RAS or Housing Assistance Payment tenancies outside the Dublin pilot area do not qualify for this package. They fall back to the standard €1,800 plus €600.
Eligibility Rules That Apply to Every SEAI Solar Grant
6 conditions run across all the domestic routes, whichever grant level you are claiming. Miss one and the application fails regardless of which scheme you applied under.
- A valid MPRN, the 11-digit number at the top of your electricity bill
- The home built and occupied before 2025
- No previous SEAI funding for the same measure at that MPRN
- An SEAI-registered solar PV company carrying out the works
- Grant approval in writing before any work starts
- A post-works BER assessment, carried out by a registered assessor and published before the grant is paid.
Eligible applicant types extend beyond owner-occupiers to private landlords, Owner Management Companies and Approved Housing Bodies. Our team handles the full application on the customer’s behalf.
How to Apply for the SEAI Solar Grant Without Losing Your Offer
Apply through the SEAI online portal before anything is bought or installed. Works started before the grant offer arrives are not eligible, and there is no retrospective route back in. Once approved, you have eight months to complete the installation and submit the paperwork.
The sequence runs in a fixed order.
- Appoint an SEAI-registered solar PV company and sign a written contract.
- Create the grant application and wait for the letter of offer.
- Book a post-works BER assessor once you have an installation date.
- Complete the installation and the BER assessment.
- Your installer and BER assessor submit the documentation to SEAI.
A newer home, a battery, or a qualifying welfare payment each change what you can claim, and the three now overlap in ways they did not twelve months ago. Working out which of the five domestic routes fits your property is the first decision, because it sets the budget for everything after it.
