Most Irish homes suit solar. Whether solar panels for a house will work comes down to the roof: how much space you have, which way it faces, and whether trees or chimneys shade it during the day. South-facing roofs produce the most, though east and west roofs still work well. Homes that use more electricity during daylight hours save the most.

Irish homeowners can claim up to €1,800 from the SEAI Solar Electricity Grant toward a home system, and a new €600 grant now covers a home battery of 5 kWh or larger fitted alongside your panels. Homes built and occupied before 2025 qualify.

Claim 60% Back Through TAMS III
TAMS III covers 60% of your eligible solar investment, with a ring-fenced ceiling of €90,000, so up to €54,000 back on a farm system. It is run by the Department of Agriculture and opens in tranches.
If your system is larger than TAMS will count, SEAI’s Non-Domestic Microgen Grant pays 45% of eligible costs up to €325,200 on applications made before 6 July 2027. You claim one or the other, never both.

Most homes do not. Ireland relaxed the rules in 2022, so homeowners can fit rooftop solar without planning permission in most cases. A few exceptions apply, such as homes in architectural conservation areas or close to an airport.
Solar panels typically last 25 years or more. Output drops very slowly over that time, so a system fitted today should still perform well decades from now.
